Few moments in a wedding ceremony are as emotionally charged as the walk down the aisle. It’s a moment filled with anticipation, pride, and sometimes a few quiet tears.

The music begins. Guests turn to look. And someone special accompanies the bride as she makes her way toward the person waiting at the front of the ceremony.

Today, it’s usually interpreted as a gesture of love and support; a parent or loved one walking beside the bride as she begins a new chapter of her life. But the origins of this tradition tell a very different story.

In many ancient and medieval societies, marriage was understood as a transfer of responsibility from one household to another. Women were often considered under the guardianship of their father until marriage, when that guardianship passed to their husband. The act of a father escorting his daughter to the groom symbolised the formal transfer of that responsibility. This moment was sometimes described, quite literally, as “giving away the bride.”

In historical terms, the phrase reflected the legal and social structure of the time. Marriage was less about two individuals choosing each other and more about an agreement between families. The ceremonial walk to the front of the gathering served as a public acknowledgement that this transition was taking place.

Even the physical structure of the aisle carries symbolic meaning. In early religious ceremonies, the aisle created a pathway between the gathered community, allowing the couple to approach the sacred space where the marriage would be formalised. Walking down the aisle therefore became both a public entrance and a symbolic journey, moving from the familiar world of family into the shared future represented by the marriage ceremony. Over centuries, this simple act of walking forward in front of witnesses took on powerful emotional significance.

As social values evolved, the meaning of this moment began to shift. Marriage gradually moved away from the concept of guardianship and ownership, toward the idea of partnership and mutual choice.

Today, most couples no longer view the walk down the aisle as a transfer of responsibility. Instead, it’s often seen as a gesture of support, pride, and family connection; a loved one accompanying the bride as she steps into a new stage of life. The symbolism has softened and transformed, reflecting modern values about equality and independence.

Because weddings today are deeply personal, couples often choose to reinterpret this moment in ways that feel meaningful to them. Some common variations include:

• Both parents walking the bride down the aisle
• The couple walking down the aisle together
• Each partner being escorted by their parents
• The bride walking alone as a symbol of independence
• Children or blended family members joining the procession

In many ceremonies, the traditional wording has also evolved. Rather than asking “Who gives this woman to be married?”, some celebrants invite a parent or loved one simply to offer their blessing or support. The focus shifts from ownership to encouragement.

The wedding procession has become a beautiful way to acknowledge the people who have supported the couple along the way. Parents, grandparents, siblings, and close friends may all play a role in the entrance, creating a sense that the marriage is not only about two individuals, but also about the community that surrounds them. Each step down the aisle becomes part of the unfolding story of the ceremony.

As a celebrant, this is often one of the most moving moments to witness. There’s something quietly powerful about that walk: the mixture of excitement, pride, and emotion that fills the space. Sometimes, it’s a father walking with his daughter.
Sometimes, it’s both parents. Other times, a grandparent, a sibling, or a dear friend. And then, there are times the bride chooses to walk alone, confident and joyful as she makes her way toward the person she has chosen to marry.

What matters most isn’t the tradition itself, but the meaning the couple gives to it. Because every step down the aisle tells a story. Not of ownership or obligation, but of love, support, and the beginning of a shared future.

When we picture a wedding, one image almost always comes to mind: a bride dressed in white. The white wedding dress has become such a powerful symbol of marriage that it can feel almost timeless, as though brides have always worn white.

But the truth is rather surprising. For most of history, brides did not wear white at all. The now-famous tradition of the white wedding dress began with a single royal wedding, and a choice that quietly reshaped wedding fashion around the world.

Before the nineteenth century, brides typically wore their finest dress, whatever colour it happened to be. Wedding gowns were rarely designed to be worn only once. Clothing was valuable and often handmade, so practicality mattered. A bride’s dress was expected to be worn again for other important occasions.

In many cultures, colours carried symbolic meaning. Blue was especially popular in medieval Europe, associated with purity and devotion. Wealthier brides might have worn rich fabrics in shades of gold, deep red, or emerald green. Today, in some parts of the world, vibrant colours are still preferred. In many Asian cultures, for example, red symbolises good fortune and happiness and remains a traditional wedding colour today.

White, interestingly, was not the obvious choice. Because white fabric was difficult to keep clean, it was often associated more with status and wealth than with symbolism.

The tradition of the white wedding dress became widely popular after the marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in 1840. At the time, royal brides typically wore richly coloured gowns decorated with jewels and embroidery that displayed royal wealth and status. But Queen Victoria chose something different. She wore a white satin gown trimmed with delicate lace, designed not to display royal jewels, but to highlight British lace-making craftsmanship. The choice was unusual, and it captured the public imagination.

Portraits and illustrations of the queen’s wedding circulated widely, and soon brides across Britain and Europe began imitating the style. Within a few decades, the white wedding dress had become fashionable among the upper classes and gradually spread to wider society. A single royal fashion decision had created a tradition.

Although Queen Victoria’s decision was largely aesthetic, the colour white soon took on symbolic meaning. Over time it became associated with ideas of purity, innocence, new beginnings, and celebration. These interpretations were shaped by cultural attitudes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly surrounding expectations of marriage.

Today, however, most brides choose white simply because it has become a recognisable and beautiful tradition, rather than because of any strict symbolic meaning. The colour has come to represent the beginning of a new chapter, a fresh page in the couple’s shared story.

Wedding fashion has continued to evolve dramatically over the years. The elaborate gowns of the Victorian era gave way to sleeker silhouettes in the early twentieth century. Wartime weddings in the 1940s often featured simpler dresses due to fabric rationing, while the post-war decades saw a return to more elaborate designs.

Modern brides have an extraordinary range of choices available to them. Some still embrace the classic white gown with lace and flowing trains. Others choose ivory, champagne, or soft pastel shades. And increasingly, couples are reimagining wedding attire entirely, with tailored suits, colourful gowns, cultural dress, or outfits designed to reflect their own personalities and values. The idea that there is only one correct way for a bride to dress has quietly faded.

Today, wedding clothing has become one of the most personal elements of the ceremony. A dress (or suit) might reflect family heritage, cultural traditions, or simply a style that feels authentic to the person wearing it.

Some brides wear dresses passed down through generations. Others design something completely unique. Some choose simplicity, others embrace drama and spectacle. What matters most is that the clothing feels like a reflection of the person stepping into the ceremony.

One of the lovely moments I often see before a ceremony begins is the quiet pause when someone steps into their wedding attire. There is a subtle shift that happens in that moment — when the reality of the day settles in. The clothing becomes part of the story. Not because it follows tradition perfectly, but because it marks the beginning of something meaningful.

And while the white wedding dress may have started with a queen nearly two centuries ago, its enduring power lies in something much simpler. It represents a moment of transition.

A step from one chapter of life into another.

Weddings are full of beautiful traditions. Some are romantic, some are symbolic, and some have rather surprising origins that have evolved dramatically over centuries. There is a moment in nearly every wedding ceremony when something ancient quietly unfolds.

It might be the exchange of rings. A parent walking beside their child down the aisle. The words “I take thee to be my husband/wife” or “I do” spoken aloud. Or a bouquet tossed joyfully into a crowd of laughing friends. These moments feel familiar, almost instinctive, as though they have always been part of weddings. And in many ways, they have.

But the traditions we recognise today didn’t appear fully formed. They are the result of centuries of evolving customs, beliefs, and cultural shifts. What we think of as “wedding traditions” are really stories that have travelled through time, carried from one generation to the next.

Some began as practical solutions. Some emerged from superstition. Others were born from politics, religion, or family alliances. And a few began simply because someone, somewhere, decided to do something different, and the idea caught on.

If we travelled back a few thousand years, the wedding ceremonies we know today would look very different. In many ancient societies, marriage was less about romance and more about family, property, and alliances. It connected households, strengthened communities, and ensured the continuation of family lines.

Love was sometimes a fortunate outcome, but rarely the primary purpose.

Over time, however, the meaning of marriage gradually shifted. Cultural change, evolving social values, and the rise of individual choice transformed marriage from an arrangement between families into something far more personal: a partnership chosen freely between two people. And as the meaning of marriage evolved, so too did the rituals surrounding it.

Some of the traditions we see at weddings today are surprisingly recent:

• the white wedding dress, for example, became popular after Queen Victoria chose to wear white when she married Prince Albert in 1840;

• the idea of placing a ring on the fourth finger of the left hand comes from an ancient belief that a vein — the vena amoris, or “vein of love” — ran directly from that finger to the heart;

• bridesmaids once dressed like the bride to confuse evil spirits;

• and the cheerful tradition of tossing a bouquet may have begun as a clever distraction to keep enthusiastic wedding guests from tearing pieces off the bride’s gown as lucky keepsakes.

Over time, these rituals softened, adapted, and took on new meaning. What once served as protection, superstition, or social obligation has become symbolism; gestures that represent commitment, celebration, and shared joy.

Today, weddings sit at a fascinating crossroads between past and present.

Couples often want to honour meaningful traditions, the ring exchange, the vows, the walk down the aisle, while also creating a ceremony that reflects their own story, values, and personalities.

Some traditions are lovingly preserved. Others are gently reimagined. And sometimes entirely new traditions are created, moments that feel so natural and meaningful that they may well become part of someone else’s wedding story in years to come.

Understanding where traditions come from can change the way we see them. A ritual that once felt automatic suddenly becomes intentional. A gesture that seemed old-fashioned reveals a deeper symbolism. And a custom that doesn’t resonate can be thoughtfully replaced with something that does.

In many ways, weddings are living history. They carry echoes of ancient ceremonies while continually evolving to reflect the values of the present moment.

Over the coming months, I’ll be exploring the stories behind many of the rituals we see at weddings today.

Some traditions have romantic beginnings. Others have rather unexpected ones. But all of them tell us something about how marriage — and society itself — has changed through time.

As a celebrant, one of the great joys of my work is helping couples navigate these traditions. Some couples embrace them wholeheartedly. Others choose to reinterpret them. And some decide to create entirely new rituals that better reflect who they are.

There is no single “correct” way to marry. But there is something deeply meaningful about understanding the traditions we inherit, and deciding which ones we would like to carry forward.

Because every ceremony, in its own way, becomes part of the continuing story.

One of the things I love most about being a celebrant is the collaborative nature of the work. A ceremony is not something I do for you—it’s something we create together. From our first conversation through to the moment you say your vows, my role is to guide you, support you, and take care of the details so your ceremony feels grounded, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

Here’s what the process of getting married with me looks like.

Step 1: Face-to-Face Meeting

Our journey begins with a face-to-face meeting, at a time and place that suits you both. This is where we take care of the formal requirements and begin getting to know each other.

At this meeting we will:

• Complete and sign the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). This needs to be completed at least 1 month prior to the ceremony.

• Sign the Service Agreement

• Sight your identification to confirm your date and place of birth
  (This may include a birth certificate or passport and licence or other form of photo ID)

I’ll also provide you with a Client Folder, which includes documents I’m legally required to give you, such as:

• The Happily Before and After government booklet

• The Code of Conduct for Marriage Celebrants

• Information about Relationship Education

Once the legalities are covered, we slow things down. We talk about you: your relationship, your values, and the kind of ceremony you want to create—both practically and emotionally. This conversation allows me to learn about your story and your journey together, and it becomes the foundation for a ceremony that truly reflects who you are.

Step 2: Draft Ceremony

Following our initial meeting, I’ll write a bespoke draft ceremony, which is emailed to you for review closer to your wedding date. This is very much a working document—you’re encouraged to read through it and suggest any changes so it feels right for you.

This is also the time to consider:

• Readings

• Music

• Your wedding vows

I encourage couples to write their own vows and am always happy to offer guidance and prompts if needed. I suggest you don’t share them with each other before the ceremony. Instead, send them to me separately. On the day, I’ll have your vows printed on a card for you to read from.

Step 3: Finalising the Ceremony

Once I receive your feedback, I’ll make the agreed changes and incorporate your chosen readings and music. The final version of the ceremony is then emailed to you—without your vows, as these will be included in the printed A5 ceremony booklet I provide on the day.

At this point, everything is in place.

Step 4: Rehearsal

Where possible, I recommend holding a rehearsal. It’s a great opportunity to walk through the ceremony, review the venue, and think about any practical considerations so everyone feels comfortable and confident.

At this stage, we’ll also complete another legal requirement: the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage, which must be signed as close to the ceremony date as possible. If a rehearsal isn’t possible, we’ll arrange another way to complete this paperwork before the ceremony.

Step 5: Ceremony Day

The day has arrived.

I’ll be at the venue at least an hour before the ceremony to set up, check details, and be available to support you and your loved ones. After the ceremony, you’ll receive:

• A commemorative marriage certificate

• A copy of your ceremony in an A5 booklet

My aim is that you feel fully present—able to enjoy and immerse yourselves in the moment—while I quietly take care of everything else.

Step 6: Registering Your Marriage

Following your ceremony, I lodge all required paperwork with the Births, Deaths and Marriages (BDM) office. This final step legally registers your marriage.

Once registered, you can apply for the official marriage certificate (used for all legal purposes), or I can arrange this for you at the time of registration. BDM charges a fee for this service, and I’m happy to provide current costings.

Ongoing Support

Communication throughout the process is tailored to you. Some couples prefer regular check-ins; others need very little contact between milestones. I’m here to support you in a way that feels right for you both.

Getting married is more than a legal event—it’s a meaningful marker in your life together. My role is to help you honour that moment with care, clarity, and a ceremony that feels truly your own.

In 2017, I found myself at a crossroads.

After more than 25 years working as a project manager, much of it within government bureaucracy, I was tired in a way that rest couldn’t fix. The work was steady, responsible, and respectable—but it no longer felt meaningful. I was fatigued by systems and processes that drained more than they gave back. I wanted work that would fuel my soul rather than deplete it.

That same year, Australia was in the midst of the same-sex marriage postal survey. It was a time of big conversations—around equality, belonging, love, and what it means to be seen and recognised. Sitting with friends and my mum one day, talking about the future and what might come next for me, someone casually dropped an idea into the conversation:

“What about becoming a marriage celebrant?”

At the time, it felt like a gentle spark rather than a fully formed plan. A quick Google search told me what was required: a Certificate IV in Celebrancy and registration with the Attorney-General’s Department. Simple enough, I thought.

What I didn’t yet understand was that celebrancy is about far more than meeting legal requirements. It carries deep responsibility—and extraordinary privilege.

I completed my celebrancy training in early 2019, and in August that year I officiated my very first wedding. It was for a dear friend, surrounded by family I knew well. In many ways, it was the perfect way to begin—safe, loving, and full of trust. What I remember most is not the nerves, but the weight of the moment: standing with people who mattered deeply to each other, marking a moment that would live with them forever.

That was when I truly understood the magic of ceremonies.

Since becoming an authorised celebrant, I’ve conducted over 40 ceremonies, including weddings, vow renewals, legal-only ceremonies, and naming ceremonies. They’ve taken place in all kinds of settings: farm properties and botanical gardens, country chapels and rainforest clearings, beaches and public parks, picnic tables and kitchen tables, historic homesteads, backyards, and community halls.

Each location has been different. Each story entirely its own.

And that’s the point.

Ceremonies and rituals matter because they help us mark time. They give shape to moments of change, commitment, love, and belonging. They say: this matters. They help us pause long enough to honour what is happening in our lives, rather than rushing past it.

As a celebrant, I’m in the privileged position of helping people create ceremonies that genuinely reflect who they are—as individuals, as couples, and as families. My role is to work with you to shape a ceremony that resonates, one that is legally sound where required, and personally meaningful always.

My background in project management might seem like an unlikely pathway into celebrancy, but it turns out to be one of my greatest strengths. I know how to guide people through a process, how to listen carefully, how to plan thoughtfully, and how to hold all the moving parts so others don’t have to. While I manage the mechanics and legalities of the ceremony, you’re free to be fully present—immersed in the experience, connected to your people, and grounded in the moment.

What brings me the greatest joy is getting to know your story and bringing it to life. I work collaboratively, taking the time to understand what matters to you, how you want your ceremony to feel, and what you want your guests to walk away remembering. I pride myself on creating ceremonies where your words, your values, and your commitments are clearly and authentically conveyed—in a style that feels like you, not a template.

I love this work. I feel genuinely honoured every time someone invites me into a significant moment in their life journey. It is intimate, meaningful, and deeply human work.

This year, I’ve set a clear goal: to dedicate more time and energy to my celebrancy practice and grow it into my full-time work. It is joyous, purposeful, and aligned with who I am. I want to continue expanding my knowledge, deepening my skills, and creating ceremonies that feel grounded, warm, and true.

Looking back, that small spark in 2017 changed everything. What began as a casual suggestion became a calling—one rooted in connection, meaning, and the quiet power of marking life’s most important moments, together.
